A Sher A Day

This Series was posted, in the mid nineties, by Mr. Abhay Avachat on the usenet group RMIM (rec.music.indian.misc) and was running from late 1995 to mid 1996. I found this series extremely informative. It offers new shayari enthusiasts a peep inside the personal lives of all those famous shayars (and shayaras).

My own knowledge of shayari in particular and the urdu language in general was greatly enhanced by this series.

If a series on Sher-o-Shayari is to begin naturally and logically then it obviously must begin with a Sher by GHalib. But I also wanted to begin with a Sher that praises GHalib. Now how good it will be to start with a Sher that accomplishes both!

A few weeks ago, there was a small discussion on RMIM about the word "har-suu". As Rajan correctly explained, it means "everywhere". There is more to it. "suu" is an independent word meaning "direction" or "towards". There is a very touching Sher which can explain the meaning clearly.

GHalib is well-known for his philosophical Shers. But it wasn't his monopoly. Others also managed it quite admirably. Here is one from GHalib's contemporary Shayar, Jauk.

The last Sher in a GHazal usually has the Shayar's alias, which in Urdu is called "taKHallus". A Shayar can use his "taKHallus" very cleverly to address himself. It sounds still better, when the thought is also as clever as its presentation.

The sarcastic bitterness of the following Sher will strike you and make you smile at the same time.

GHalib is now known to everybody. Even to those who have no interest in Shayari. But he did not enjoy the same recognition during his lifetime. In fact he was often ridiculed for writing incomprehensible poetry. In his time people were still under the influence of Shayar's like "'Mir' Taqi Mir" and "Mirza Sauda". And this is how they taunted him
